Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are a very common complication of hair removal methods such as shaving and waxing. It is caused by hairs growing into the skin instead of growing the way it should. This creates an inflammatory response that manifests as red bumps and can cause skin discoloration and sometimes small firm bumps of scar tissue. Avoidance of shaving and waxing can be very helpful for this condition. Depilatories (cream hair removers) are less likely to cause ingrown hairs than shaving or waxing but can cause skin irritation in some people. For men who require a clean shaven appearance for professional reasons, using a single edge razor and shaving down instead of up can be very helpful. Alternatively, using an electric razor with an adjustable blade set so as to leave a bit of stubble, instead of shaving close to the skin, can also be helpful.

Prescription strength topical anti-inflammatory and antibiotic preparations can be used to calm down some of the symptoms of razor bumps as well but often do not clear the condition completely. When these medications are stopped, the condition will likely recur. For this reason, many of our clients opt for Laser Hair Removal as a more definitive treatment for this condition.
