Acne

Causes of Acne
Acne is a common skin disease that affects over 85% of people at some time during their lives. It affects teenagers and adults, and both men and women. It is characterized by pimples or whiteheads and blackheads and, in its more severe forms, by cysts. Acne can be caused by a number of factors. Four key factors that cause acne: clogged pores, excess oil, the presence and activity of certain acne-causing bacteria , and inflammation. Other factors that can contribute to acne are cosmetics that clog the pores, medications, hormonal imbalances, environment and stress. While science does not show that diet causes acne, some individuals may worsen their acne when ingesting specific substances such as sugary or oily foods.

Treatment Options
There are many treatment options for acne. Prescribed medications include oral and topical antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, and topical and oral retinoids (vitamin A derivatives). Chemical peels and Microdermabrasion can also be very useful to help clear acne prone skin and can be performed safely on all skin types. Light-based therapy with the Isolaz™ laser can be very helpful in clearing acne and is a wonderful option for those who wish to avoid the potential adverse side-effects of oral therapies. All of these treatments are performed routinely at our office. A good skin care regimen is also very important in acne control. During your office visit, Keris Dermatology dermatologists will perform a Personalized Skin Care Consultation, determine the best course of treatment for your acne, and provide you with the most appropriate skin care regimen. Clear skin IS possible.
