Age Spots / Brown Spots

Over time, sun exposure can lead to a variety of sun-induced skin disorders. One very common sun-induced skin disorder is the age spot or ‘liver spot’. ‘Liver spots, ‘ or solar lentigines, are brown spots that are benign and occur on sun exposed areas of the skin. If you have solar lentigines, this may indicate some degree of sun damage of the skin. We recommend coming in for annual Skin Cancer Screenings. Solar lentigines can be treated with prescription strength retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives), topical anti-oxidants, and chemical peels. The most efficacious treatments are with light based technologies. We commonly use Broad Band Light for solar lentigines. After treatment, it is very important to protect the area in question from the sun either with clothing or with a broad spectrum sunscreen to prevent recurrence.
